The scoop:
13 bilevels built Oct. and Nov. 1958:
C&NW 700-709 coaches to Amtrak 9611-9620
C&NW 6400 parlor to C&NW 225 coach
C&NW 600 coach-parlor to Amtrak 9600
C&NW 903 coach-bar lounge to Amtrak 9601
C&NW 7601 baggage RPO tavern lunch counter and 7602 baggage tavern lunch counter and 6953 and 6954 diners got raised roofs to match the bilevels.
600 and 903 were rebuilt to 'SipNSnack' food service cars to allow the diners to be retired, and they retained that configuration into Amtrak. BSB

Bilevel cars are popular with families. Children, in particular, enjoy these cars, because they have two levels, which affords them the opportunity to 'explore'. For parents taking their children on a 'train trip', diversions like these can be welcome.
